Another editing session...getting there...

We tried the reverse style today =D we found it worked really well with a few shots we already used (which also solves our running out of clips problem) and went with our story of Edie being really happy (at the beginning of the video) to feeling unhappy, lost and unloved (near the end). A few examples of how this works are when Jack (Warhol) moved his hand towards Samantha's an we reversed this, their hands separated and moved away from another to show how they aren't really meant for one another. Edie is meant for Dylan. Another was when Edie is modelling and she looks up at the camera to smile, in reverse shes smiling but slowly looks but down as her smile disappears.

We also added a few more shots(that haven't yet been used) from when Edie is shopping like she was at the beginning but in reverse just to remind the audience of how happy she once was.

Editing proponed/checklist

Samantha was absent in today's session and we're at a point where we need to both be there to finish of our video. It's difficult to add anything without the others input and vision; therefore our editing had to be delayed for another day.

In the meantime I was looking at the checklist for the coursework and realised I hadn't covered two questions, which are:

How to expand audience/increase sales: Expand our audience and sales can be used through using the media; in particular advertisement in magazines. At first we would just promote the song on magazines that specialises in music and fashion but soon enough we would expand many other genres of magazines and through other medias such as TV (music channels, competitions and adverts) and pirate radio to play the song 24/7. On the cover of our magazine advertisement, we can also promote the film "Factory Girl" to get the audience to watch it in order to gain more knowledge of Edie Sedgewick's life which give them a better understanding to our video (and hopefully an emotional attachment to it as well). Billboards are a great way to advertise our song, the profile of Gary Roberts and a remembrance of Edie. We could get stores like Mark and Spencer's to model a range of sixties clothes to support this on these. Our song can be also used as background music for drug awareness campaigns too.

What T.V channel/time slot would the video be shown on/in?: Shown on channels which specialise in music such as MTV, The Box, 4Music, Magic, Kerrang, Q, Kiss etc, and should be on in the evening from 6pm onwards because the visual contents and lyrics may be unsuitable for the morning/afternoon slots.

More editing...

Samantha and I continued editing our video. It's all looking as it we hoped but can be frustrating when it comes to adding transitions still as it keeps throwing everything else (most importantly the miming) out of sync; therefore we have to cut down our clips.

The other issue we have is that though we have many shots left, most of them are the same shot just filmed several times over so we can choose the best one to use. We fear we will just run out of any completely new shots and have to repeat shots over again. Another issue i'm worried about is how it is presented; will it make sense to our audience? Perhaps we need to act a quick summary of her life at the beginning just so the audience have more knowledge and understand it more.

Friday's session

Yesterday Samantha was unfortunately absent due to taking her last exam so I found it difficult to add or change anything on my own without her help. Most of the session I just played around with the effects to see what I could do or what was new to me. I tried to minimise the "aged film" effect as it was distorting the images a little but nothing really changed that much. I darkened the clips where Edie is under the influence of drugs to give it a more gritty feel and emphasise her flaws. I also came across a fast, slow, reverse effect which may come in handy and tried it out of a few clips but didn't apply as it could throw the whole timing out of sync. There wasn't much else I could find myself doing however next session we should be back together:)

Editing

Two sessions:

First session: Tuesday 19th

We imported the rest of what we filmed in the new year and used most of it for our vid. The clips added nicely into the gaps and everything was going well until imovie suddenly went off our screen. As we didn't save it, we lost everything we just did so we had to restart. Lucikly it was still imported so all we had to do was cut it down again and place them where we wanted. This took some time to redo but we managed it:)

Second session: Wednesday 20th

We edited more of our music video, getting quite alot of the beginning done until we showed sir who reminded us that we needed to add transitions. As our video is in a montage style and changes time quite frequently from one place to another, there were quite alot of transitions to add. However as we did so, it moved all our clips across and so threw all the lip syncing of Jack (Bob Dylan) of beat so he was in time with the music. We therefore had to go back to either cut down or extend clips which was quite time consuming.
Samantha and I stayed behind to try and get as much done as we could. After we completed most of the beginning with its transitions, we could then add more clips, cut or extend as usual but always adding transitions along the way. We remembered to save as we went along too. Then we started with the effects so when Wahol is filming Edie, it would be in the "black and white" and "aged film" effect and when it was in the present it would be in a Sepia colour to give it that 60's feel to it. There is still alot of improvement needing to be done.

Editing Ideas

Finally, this week we can hopefully get back to editing our video:)
Samantha still has a couple of exams left but they shouldn't get too in the way with our coursework sessions.

Until I can actually get to the facilities required to complete our video, all i can do at this moment in time is get any new, fresh ideas for editing. So I went on Youtube, which I find to be the best source to find any music video, and I came across a Beyonce video called "Flaws and all".

As the Embed is disable, click on this link to watch the full music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1nYrVqHzJw

The editing of this video is styled in a way to make it a home video which for most of our music video is what we want too. The speed of each shot is very short and quick, just about capturing moments of Beyonce quirky and fun side where she's either cheekily and directly "flirting" with the camera or playfully messing around in a child like way. Sometimes the shots are long but only when she is in slow motion!
There are plenty of straight cuts of Beyonce in the same location but her body language is different after each cut which emphases it being a home video because there is no continuity.
There are a few fades where Beyonce is moved from one location to the next.

The overall presentation of the video is amazing. I love the whole design with the background being a sort of film effect, the edges being blacked out so your focus is completely on Beyonce (sometime the black edge gradually gets smaller so it zooms onto her facial features) and theres one clip where you get one huge moving image of Beyonce and underneath a small film strip of beyonce posing differently. Other clips use an effect where Beyonce is split into smaller and smaller squares.

Its a video all about having fun and the editing portrays this beautifully! However in our video we do not only want to capture Edie's fun side but also a dark side with her drug abuse.

Editing prosponed

Unfortunately, due to many resits this month and the school closing twice because of the bad weather, Samantha and I haven' t had any time together to import the rest of our video and edit it in. All our media classes have been taken over with revision so no time either in that period to do coursework. Once our exams are over we can get back to editing:)

Last part of filming

Samantha, Jack and I finally completed our filming on New Years Day. All we had to do was get some footage of Samantha as Edie modelling, Edie and Dylan being intimate with one another and then being affectionate to one another outside. I also played about with the camera more in these clips such as doing some half body shots of Samantha, rolling shots, pan shots, wide shots, high shots etc. All this was done in Samantha's bedroom.

Here are some still shots of Jack as Bob Dylan and both Samantha and Jack together (which we may use in our music video):
